WHERE TO STAY:
Hilda Crockett's Chesapeake House Bed and Breakfast, Main Ridge. The oldest operating B&B on the island, it opened in 1939. There are eight rooms available in two houses, one of which has the restaurant where a family-style dinner is served daily. Rates are $120 double occupancy, $100 single, and include breakfast and dinner, plus pick-up when you arrive. 757-891-2331.
Shirley's Bay View Inn, accommodations in the main house and private cottages. Seasonal rates, May through October, $110 per night weekdays, $125 per night, weekends. Off-season rates, November through April, $100 per night. 800-330-3554.
Sunset Inn Bed and Breakfast, "motel-like" accommodations. The inn is for sale, so check for availability before arriving. Rates are $110, single or double, per night weekdays; $125 per night weekends. 757-891-2535.
WHERE TO EAT: This is seafood country, so expect it fresh.
Hilda Crockett's Chesapeake House is open daily serving home-cooked all-you-can-eat breakfasts of scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, Chesapeake-style fried potatoes, homemade fried bread and preserves, from 7-9 a.m. Cost is $7 per person, $6 ages 6-12, $5 ages 5 and under. Lunch and dinner are served family-style and include crab cakes, clam fritters, Virginia ham, potato salad and hot corn pudding. Cost is $19, $10 ages 6-12, $5 ages 5 and under.
Fisherman's Corner is operated by Tangier Island residents. On our visit, it was closed for a private wedding dinner, but it was recommended by several locals for its local bay seafood meals. 757-891-2900.
Lorraine's Sandwich Shop offers pizza, sandwiches, subs and seafood. It's open daily and is the only restaurant that makes deliveries. 757-891-2225.
The Waterfront Restaurant is located at the docks, so you can't miss it if you arrive by boat. It serves crab cakes, soft-shell crabs, subs and burgers. Picnic tables out front overlook the dock and water. Open daily mid-May through October.
