Mary Ann and Bill O'Donnell were married six years ago under the Community Bridge on Frederick’s downtown Carroll Creek. They now live in a 100-year-old home on East Fourth Street.

Mary Ann O'Donnell had spent 25 years in Thurmont and when she and Bill O'Donnell married six years ago, they continued to live in the pleasant, rural community. A big house, a big yard, and two big dogs, they weren't unhappy, but they were restless.

As couple do, they wondered about the next stage.

"She did say it first," Bill acknowledged.

"I told him it was time," recounted Mary Ann, a Howard County special education teacher.

No, it wasn't about children. Well, not about more children, anyway.

The youngest family member had left for George Washington University, they said standing together on the front steps of their recently purchased Frederick row house.

"I knew I wanted to be downtown," Mary Ann said. "I drove through Frederick every day on my way home from work."

They had a swimming pool and a hot tub in Thurmont, but not much of a social life, they realized. Bill is 52. Mary Ann, 46. There should be more to do.

"It's being able to walk to the stores, the coffee shops, the theaters, the restaurants and all the spur of the moments things you can," Mary Ann said. "That's why we're here. We want to take cooking lessons at Isabella's."
