The smell is of a pleasant potpourri. Soft music plays in the background. The dining room is bright, an appetizing setting for the hearty breakfasts that owner Betty LeBlanc serves at Hollerstown Hill Bed and Breakfast in Frederick.
Bed and breakfasts have taken on many forms in this country. At its most traditional, a homeowner sets aside a couple of bedrooms to rent to travelers for overnight lodging, and provides breakfast in the morning.
Two B&Bs available in Frederick are LeBlanc's, which opened six years ago on Clarke Place, and The Inn at Stone Manor in Middletown, reopened last summer by Brian and Loree Childs. They don't live on the property, but have focused on creating a country inn setting for guests.
Hollerstown Hill is close to many restaurants and activities in downtown Frederick, while Stone Manor is more of a destination inn, a place where guests can get away from busy lives and hike around the property's 126 rural acres or sit on one of the many porches and read.

Betty and Phil LeBlanc bought the circa 1901 late Victorian house at 4 Clarke Place in 1999. Betty LeBlanc, 57, had just retired from a career with AT&T. The couple had lived in Chicago, Seattle, New Jersey and most recently in Australia, when they were transferred to Rockville.
